It feels like it’s been a long pregnancy but it really hasn’t, the average gestation period for a German Shepherd is a little over 3  months, 63 days to be exact.  So we have moved along quicker than it felt!

Enough of my short story and on to the puppies….

This litter is from Luxanna’s Roxanne and Deblyn’s Just After Midnight from Debyln’s German Shepherds, both are OFA Good Hips and Elbows with good temperaments.

We had 6 pups total, 1 female and 5 males.  At this time 3 males are available, a deposit will hold your pick!

These puppies are tan and black with very nice dark coats, AKC registration is in process, they will be vaccinated and ready for their new homes by Sept 18, 2011.

Roxanne: OFA good hips and elbows, lives a country life with her owner/boss Zach (my son) on an almond ranch.  She is active, smart and extremely well mannered.

Brando: OFA good hips and elbows, is the Sire from Deblyn’s German Shepherds, as you can see below he is all black & gorgeous.

Yay, the puppies are coming!

I’m very excited about our litter that is on the way, not only because it was such a wonderful experience that created a new bond between Luna and me, but the true reward was the happiness it brought to the families they went home with….I liked that feeling.

This last litter was a sweet group of pups full of personality with good temperments, I am pretty sure this new litter will be the same. They are from Rocco and Luna and are due in October and will be ready for their new homes by Christmas, a deposit will hold your pick of the litter.

1. Be consistent. Choose a spot where you want Puppy to go potty, and take him there every time. Also, come up with a word that you will use every time you want him to go. For example, say “go potty,” then, when your dog does his business, follow it with “good potty” and praise him like crazy. He will quickly learn to associate the word “potty” and the potty spot with doing his business.  Don’t change your word around or your dog won’t get what it means.

2. Never let that puppy out of your sight. First of all, there are tons of dangerous things your pooch can get into when you’re not watching, so you should avoid the hazard all together by keeping a constant eye on your puppy. Furthermore, puppies all display similar behavior before they go potty. They sniff and root around, and turn in circles, and appear restless. Keep an eye out for this behavior and take your pup outside before he ever has a chance to go potty in the house, and you will be a step ahead in training. As you get to know your puppy better, you will grow more familiar with his “gotta go” behavior.

3.    Always reward your pup with tons of energetic praise and a treat when he goes potty outside. If you wait until you get inside to give him his treat, he will have already forgotten what he did to deserve it, so keep a couple treats in your pocket every time you walk your pup.

4.    Don’t take him inside right away. Your puppy will learn that as soon as he’s done going potty, outside time is over and it’s back in the house, so he’ll stall as long as he can. If you always play with your puppy for a few minutes after he goes potty, he’ll learn to get it out of the way immediately so he can play with you.

5.    A puppy shouldn’t be expected to make it more than one or two hours until he is around three months old. This means he might end up waking you up in the middle of the night. Do not be cranky with him just because you’re sleepy, it’s not his fault.

6.    Put your pooch on a regular feeding schedule. If you feed him at the same times every day, he will need to go potty around the same times too. If you free feed your dog (leave food out all the time) you won’t be able to regulate his eating to stabilize his potty-time patterns.

7.    Always take your puppy out immediately after he wakes up in the morning and after naps, as well as after every meal, play or training time, and last thing before bed.

8.    Pet/baby gates are perfect for restricting puppies to one room where you can keep an eye on them.

9.    Puppy pads (especially those pretreated with pheromones) are a great way to train your puppy to go in one specific spot indoors if you live in a high rise apartment, or are somehow incapable of taking your puppy out every time it is necessary.

10.    A good rule of thumb is, however many months old a puppy is, he shouldn’t be expected to hold it more than that many hours. So, two month old puppies shouldn’t have to wait longer than two hours; three month old puppies, three hours, and so on. This is, of course, only a generalization, as all puppies are different. No dog should be left crated for more than 6 hours.

Police dogs are being retired on their own “pensions” and “health plans” by the Cambridge Shire Force.

It is believed to be the first force in England to take on the costs of retired police dogs.

Previously an officer would sign a disclaimer taking responsibility for the dog’s actions and medical care – otherwise the animal would be re-homed.

But now Cambridge Shire Police is paying for the food, vet bills and kenneling costs during an animal’s retirement.

‘Marvelous news’

So far eight police dogs in Cambridge Shire have benefited from the canine pension plan.

Sheila Maw, a dog breeder and chairman of the Retired Lancashire Police Dog Benevolent Fund charity, said: “Before we started three years ago we did a survey of all the police forces in the UK and none of the 90% who replied had a retirement scheme for dogs.

“It’s marvelous news that Cambridge Shire police are doing this, as many handlers have to give up their dogs when they retire through ill health or old age as they can’t afford to look after them.”

Mrs Maw said she did not know of any other police force which paid for its police dogs’ retirement in this way.

However she said the Avon & Somerset and Lancashire forces both had charities which supported their dogs in retirement.

If you have been following me here on my dog blog, you know my story, if not let me bring you up to speed. I live in the country in Turlock, CA. I have had many dogs and can’t seem to live without them. I have been driving my hubby crazy for many years with our menagerie of pets and every time my German Shepherd breeder friend Debby has puppies I end up with one! The craziest is, as you see here I just sold 6 puppies of my own!

Dex is from Deblyns and TjR’s, their first breeding of the famous Champions Diva & Flex. I was given pick of the litter, I know that sounds awesome but there are strings attached….I must socialize, socialize, socialize and socialize, basically he goes where I go. Then there is the training, bathing & drying, manicures, pedicures, exercising, teeth work, road work all in preparation for hitting the German Shepherd show world.

Call me crazy but I am very greatful and excited for this opportunistic venture, so here I go…wish us luck!

Hot Weather Not Cool for Dogs in Cars, Warns Kennel Club….

The Kennel Club has warned of the dangers of leaving dogs unattended in vehicles after the recent deaths of four dogs in three separate incidents in the Scottish Highlands.

The tragic deaths took place over the weekend as three dog owners left animals unattended in cars as temperatures rose to over 30 degrees Celsius in parts of the UK.

On Monday, the Met Office issued a heatwave warning across large parts of the UK, with temperatures expected to rise to 32 degree Celsius in the coming days. Such high temperatures are intensified through car windscreens and windows, and even with windows open it can take just 20 minutes for dogs to suffer from heatstroke and die an agonising death.

The Kennel Club ‘Open for Dogs’ campaign encourages more businesses to accept dogs, avoiding the need to leave them unattended in hot cars. Thousands of dog-friendly attractions are currently listed on the website www.openfordogs.org.uk.

Caroline Kisko, Communications Director at the Kennel Club, commented: “Even responsible dog owners can make the mistake of not realising just how lethal travelling in the heat with their dog can be.

“The soaring temperatures only intensify the problem dogs have when travelling in hot conditions. I would urge owners to only travel if they can ensure that their dog can be kept cool, and if their destination is dog-friendly so they are not left in a vehicle.

“Restrictions for dog owners on where they can take their dog seem to be an ever increasing dilemma for many. We are constantly lobbying with our ‘Open for Dogs’ campaign, to ensure that dogs are welcome wherever their owners wish to travel. If this is not possible then people really must either leave their dog at home or not travel at all.”

Guidelines for traveling with your dog can be downloaded from a special section of the Kennel Club website – www.doginformation.org.uk.

Tips for traveling with your dog:

ALWAYS

• Actively seek dog-friendly places to go if you are travelling anywhere with your dog.
• Consider the weather and your journey in advance, especially if you don’t have air conditioning in your car. Think about whether the journey for your dog is absolutely necessary.
• Make sure your dog has plenty of space in the car and isn’t squashed or forced to sit in direct sunlight.
• Make sure there is shade provided; even in an air conditioned car a dog can become too hot if in full sun.
• Make sure plenty of stops are taken with lots of water available to drink.
• Take cold water in a thermos rather than a plastic bottle so it stays cold rather than being luke warm. Ice cubes are helpful in a thermos for cooling too.

NEVER

• Leave a dog unattended in a car, even with the window open and water available. Take them out of the car and find a secure, cool place with access to shade and water.
• Let your dog take part in unnecessary exertion, or stand in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time.
• Pass by a dog if you see one suffering in a car. Whether it be in a supermarket car park or at a show, make sure you let someone in authority know and if in doubt call the police or the SPCA.
