It was a long day here at my place, but all went well with Luna’s labor and delivery….

7 healthy squeaky new puppies!

There are 2 males and 5 females that will be ready for their new approved homes by the middle of December 2009, they will be current on vaccinations, pretty close to crate trained, loved & well socialized in a clean healthy country environment making a wonderful addition to your family!

I have had the opportunity to partner with Debby White of Deblyns.com who has been a responsible breeder for more than 20 years. We believe in the health of our German Shepherds with screening for hereditary health problems by a licensed veterinarian prior to breeding, OFA certification, a 2yr replacement health guarantee against life threatening hereditary disorders.

All puppies are expected to be spayed or neutered at the appropriate age unless sold as show quality, we believe this helps us to do our part against irresponsible breeding practices and to help reduce the growing number of unwanted dogs in shelters throughout the country.

Yay, the puppies are coming!

I’m very excited about our litter that is on the way, not only because it was such a wonderful experience that created a new bond between Luna and me, but the true reward was the happiness it brought to the families they went home with….I liked that feeling.

This last litter was a sweet group of pups full of personality with good temperments, I am pretty sure this new litter will be the same. They are from Rocco and Luna and are due in October and will be ready for their new homes by Christmas, a deposit will hold your pick of the litter.

1. Be consistent. Choose a spot where you want Puppy to go potty, and take him there every time. Also, come up with a word that you will use every time you want him to go. For example, say “go potty,” then, when your dog does his business, follow it with “good potty” and praise him like crazy. He will quickly learn to associate the word “potty” and the potty spot with doing his business.  Don’t change your word around or your dog won’t get what it means.

2. Never let that puppy out of your sight. First of all, there are tons of dangerous things your pooch can get into when you’re not watching, so you should avoid the hazard all together by keeping a constant eye on your puppy. Furthermore, puppies all display similar behavior before they go potty. They sniff and root around, and turn in circles, and appear restless. Keep an eye out for this behavior and take your pup outside before he ever has a chance to go potty in the house, and you will be a step ahead in training. As you get to know your puppy better, you will grow more familiar with his “gotta go” behavior.

3.    Always reward your pup with tons of energetic praise and a treat when he goes potty outside. If you wait until you get inside to give him his treat, he will have already forgotten what he did to deserve it, so keep a couple treats in your pocket every time you walk your pup.

4.    Don’t take him inside right away. Your puppy will learn that as soon as he’s done going potty, outside time is over and it’s back in the house, so he’ll stall as long as he can. If you always play with your puppy for a few minutes after he goes potty, he’ll learn to get it out of the way immediately so he can play with you.

5.    A puppy shouldn’t be expected to make it more than one or two hours until he is around three months old. This means he might end up waking you up in the middle of the night. Do not be cranky with him just because you’re sleepy, it’s not his fault.

6.    Put your pooch on a regular feeding schedule. If you feed him at the same times every day, he will need to go potty around the same times too. If you free feed your dog (leave food out all the time) you won’t be able to regulate his eating to stabilize his potty-time patterns.

7.    Always take your puppy out immediately after he wakes up in the morning and after naps, as well as after every meal, play or training time, and last thing before bed.

8.    Pet/baby gates are perfect for restricting puppies to one room where you can keep an eye on them.

9.    Puppy pads (especially those pretreated with pheromones) are a great way to train your puppy to go in one specific spot indoors if you live in a high rise apartment, or are somehow incapable of taking your puppy out every time it is necessary.

10.    A good rule of thumb is, however many months old a puppy is, he shouldn’t be expected to hold it more than that many hours. So, two month old puppies shouldn’t have to wait longer than two hours; three month old puppies, three hours, and so on. This is, of course, only a generalization, as all puppies are different. No dog should be left crated for more than 6 hours.

Flex is a very active 4-year old German Shepherd Dog! His favorite activity is herding! He loves to herd sheep, cattle and ducks. He has earned his Started titles in herding and this year we are competing in the advanced classes. He is also a “Show-Dog”! He competes in multiple venues in the AKC and International conformation ring. He is currently rated the top ranked dog competing for the International 2009 Gold Cup.

Flex finished his AKC Championship last year and is competing in the Best of Breed competition in the AKC ring. He currently has earned 13 Best of Breeds with Group placements. Flex also enjoys participating in Performance events. He has earned his Companion Dog and Rally Excellent titles. We are currently working on retrieving over the jump for his Open title. Most importantly, Flex is our companion.

He loves to play with his Henrietta chicken and his tennis ball! He loves to go for a walk and bark or try to chase the squirrels! He sleeps wherever he wants and always gets plenty of attention!

It’s been six weeks since our puppies have arrived and I have been knee deep in puppy breath, whining, kisses, feeding, cleaning and lots of poop. Until lately I have been sharing motherhood responsibilities with Luna, now I have more than she. Her nursing days are coming to an end, it is now an occasional duty I think out of guilt, I’m sure I speak for all mothers when I say….I understand!

I must say I do love it when they all see me coming and can’t get enough of me, there is a bond as if I had birthed them. All wanting individual attention, I find myself on the ground sitting in the middle of this lively group of puppies talking baby talk, I always made fun of people who did that and here I am…ewey ewey goewy!

Even with all the work, this experience has truly been rewarding. I take pride in nurturing this special breed of Shepherds and It gives me a full heart to know that these dogs will bring many years of love and devotion to a family. Shortly they will have moved on to their new homes and I will be left with an empty soft spot and a new appreciation for the wonders that mother nature has created in the animal world.

I consider myself lucky to have had this opportunity by my good friend Debby. There will be more babies to come in the future….right after Luna gets her herding title!

Today I want to blog about about my first German Shepherd….

It all started two years ago while working out with my friend Debby of Deblyns German Shepherds, she came in the door and announced to us that her dog Lisa had only one puppy. Not really knowing much about the usual amount of babies shepherds birth, I didn’t think that was odd, but she was not happy about this poor puppy being an only child.

So as weeks went by, I heard lots about “Una”, meaning one in spanish, how poor baby had no litter mates to play with and mommy wasn’t very nurturing and how it was time to leave the White house for a special permanent home with no takers.

See where I am going with this?

Well, on a visit to the White house shortly after, my friend Debby comes out with this darling puppy and of course it was love at first sight, now you must know, that back home I already had 4 dogs and my husband was not gonna be happy with me if I came home with another dog. But I did it any way and this is the beginning of my German Shepherd family!

So, here is the rest of the story!

Now I have Luna (there was a name change) for 3 mos, we are getting to know her little personality, my other dogs are excepting her into the pack, we are loving puppy breath, learning how to crate train, getting used to her independent female-ness, all is going well….then Debbie does it again!

“Oh anna, I have the nicest male puppy and he is gonna be very handsome. I hate to see him go but I can’t keep him, I want you to have him to show or herd with, then he can be bred with Luna someday & they will make beautiful babies!”

See where I am going with this?

Geeze, I fall for the pitch again, and now I come home with Rocco. Of course, my husband wants to shot me, everyone thinks I’m crazy and oh yeah, I now have 5 other dogs, 3 horses & 3 cats at home….I think I am crazy!!!

Of course Rocco is the typical male (I’ve been told with this breed) and only has eyes for me, he is so very very sweet, timid and loves me like no other dog I have ever had to this day, truly a mommas boy!

Rocco and Luna are now 2 yrs old, like most puppy owners we have made it through the chewing stage, the pooping in the crate stage, the jumping in the big pool stage (they now have their own), the digging stage, although Luna loves dirt & probably always will and I have the holes to prove it! They are both living a very happy lifestyle here in the country at “Camp Turlock”. I had both dogs herding tested and the natural instinct is very strong. Luna & I have been taking lessons, teacher loves her and our herding future looks good, my goal is to take her as far as I can!

I will finish my story with this…. I do believe the naughty-ness like siblings will always be their nature, some days fun & some days not!!!!
