It was a long day here at my place, but all went well with Luna’s labor and delivery….

7 healthy squeaky new puppies!

There are 2 males and 5 females that will be ready for their new approved homes by the middle of December 2009, they will be current on vaccinations, pretty close to crate trained, loved & well socialized in a clean healthy country environment making a wonderful addition to your family!

I have had the opportunity to partner with Debby White of Deblyns.com who has been a responsible breeder for more than 20 years. We believe in the health of our German Shepherds with screening for hereditary health problems by a licensed veterinarian prior to breeding, OFA certification, a 2yr replacement health guarantee against life threatening hereditary disorders.

All puppies are expected to be spayed or neutered at the appropriate age unless sold as show quality, we believe this helps us to do our part against irresponsible breeding practices and to help reduce the growing number of unwanted dogs in shelters throughout the country.

Yay, the puppies are coming!

I’m very excited about our litter that is on the way, not only because it was such a wonderful experience that created a new bond between Luna and me, but the true reward was the happiness it brought to the families they went home with….I liked that feeling.

This last litter was a sweet group of pups full of personality with good temperments, I am pretty sure this new litter will be the same. They are from Rocco and Luna and are due in October and will be ready for their new homes by Christmas, a deposit will hold your pick of the litter.

10 great house training tips from “Next Day Pets”….

1. Be consistent. Choose a spot where you want Puppy to go potty, and take him there every time. Also, come up with a word that you will use every time you want him to go. For example, say “go potty,” then, when your dog does his business, follow it with “good potty” and praise him like crazy. He will quickly learn to associate the word “potty” and the potty spot with doing his business. Don’t change your word around or your dog won’t get what it means.

2. Never let that puppy out of your sight. First of all, there are tons of dangerous things your pooch can get into when you’re not watching, so you should avoid the hazard all together by keeping a constant eye on your puppy. Furthermore, puppies all display similar behavior before they go potty. They sniff and root around, and turn in circles, and appear restless. Keep an eye out for this behavior and take your pup outside before he ever has a chance to go potty in the house, and you will be a step ahead in training. As you get to know your puppy better, you will grow more familiar with his “gotta go” behavior.

3. Always reward your pup with tons of energetic praise and a treat when he goes potty outside. If you wait until you get inside to give him his treat, he will have already forgotten what he did to deserve it, so keep a couple treats in your pocket every time you walk your pup.

4. Don’t take him inside right away. Your puppy will learn that as soon as he’s done going potty, outside time is over and it’s back in the house, so he’ll stall as long as he can. If you always play with your puppy for a few minutes after he goes potty, he’ll learn to get it out of the way immediately so he can play with you.

5. A puppy shouldn’t be expected to make it more than one or two hours until he is around three months old. This means he might end up waking you up in the middle of the night. Do not be cranky with him just because you’re sleepy, it’s not his fault.

6. Put your pooch on a regular feeding schedule. If you feed him at the same times every day, he will need to go potty around the same times too. If you free feed your dog (leave food out all the time) you won’t be able to regulate his eating to stabilize his potty-time patterns.

7. Always take your puppy out immediately after he wakes up in the morning and after naps, as well as after every meal, play or training time, and last thing before bed.

8. Pet/baby gates are perfect for restricting puppies to one room where you can keep an eye on them.

9. Puppy pads (especially those pretreated with pheromones) are a great way to train your puppy to go in one specific spot indoors if you live in a high rise apartment, or are somehow incapable of taking your puppy out every time it is necessary.

10. A good rule of thumb is, however many months old a puppy is, he shouldn’t be expected to hold it more than that many hours. So, two month old puppies shouldn’t have to wait longer than two hours; three month old puppies, three hours, and so on. This is, of course, only a generalization, as all puppies are different. No dog should be left crated for more than 6 hours.

Remember my friend Debby?

She did it AGAIN…..I came home with another puppy, I am addicted to puppy breath!

If you have been following me here on my dog blog, you know my story, if not let me bring you up to speed. I live in the country in Turlock, CA. I have had many dogs and can’t seem to live without them. I have been driving my hubby crazy for many years with our menagerie of pets and every time my German Shepherd breeder friend Debby has puppies I end up with one! The craziest is, as you see here I just sold 6 puppies of my own!

So meet Mr. Dex….

Dex is from Deblyns and TjR’s, their first breeding of the famous Champions Diva & Flex. I was given pick of the litter, I know that sounds awesome but there are strings attached….I must socialize, socialize, socialize and socialize, basically he goes where I go. Then there is the training, bathing & drying, manicures, pedicures, exercising, teeth work, road work all in preparation for hitting the German Shepherd show world.

Call me crazy but I am very greatful and excited for this opportunistic venture, so here I go…wish us luck!

How to prepare for your German Shepherd Puppy….

Just a little humor I wanted to share, I’m sure we’ve all been there at some point!

Pour cold apple juice on the carpet in several places and walk around barefoot in the dark

Wear a sock to work that has had the toes shredded by a blender

Immediately upon waking, stand outside in the rain and dark saying, “Be a good puppy and go potty-hurry up now — come on, let’s go.

Cover all of your best suits with dog hair. Dark suits must have white hair and light suits must have dark. Also, some hair must be in your first cup of morning coffee

Play catch with a wet tennis ball

Run out in the snow in your bare feet to close the gate

Tip over a basket of clean laundry, scatter clothing all over the floor, taking care to shred at least one of each pair of socks.(See above.

When the doorbell rings drop your dirty underwear on the living room floor, because that is where the pup will drag it anyway — after all, company is coming

Jump out of your chair shortly before the end of your favorite TV show and run to the door shouting, “No, NO! Do that OUTSIDE!” Miss the end of the program

Gouge the leg of the dining room table several times with a Screwdriver

Put chocolate pudding on the carpet in the morning, and do not try to clean it up until you return from work that evening

Take a warm, cuddly blanket out of the dryer and immediately wrap it around yourself. This is the feeling you get when your puppy falls asleep on your lap.

It was a bitter sweet day at our home…bitter in that three puppies left, sweet in that they all went to great homes. It’s a good feeling knowing that all my puppy nurturing will be continued by their new families!

I would like to thank these special people for their appreciation of my first litter, because of their history and incredible love of the German Shepherd breed it makes my job all worth while!

Puppy Life at Luxanna’s….

It’s been six weeks since our puppies have arrived and I have been knee deep in puppy breath, whining, kisses, feeding, cleaning and lots of poop. Until lately I have been sharing motherhood responsibilities with Luna, now I have more than she. Her nursing days are coming to an end, it is now an occasional duty I think out of guilt, I’m sure I speak for all mothers when I say….I understand!

I must say I do love it when they all see me coming and can’t get enough of me, there is a bond as if I had birthed them. All wanting individual attention, I find myself on the ground sitting in the middle of this lively group of puppies talking baby talk, I always made fun of people who did that and here I am…ewey ewey goewy!

Even with all the work, this experience has truly been rewarding. I take pride in nurturing this special breed of Shepherds and It gives me a full heart to know that these dogs will bring many years of love and devotion to a family. Shortly they will have moved on to their new homes and I will be left with an empty soft spot and a new appreciation for the wonders that mother nature has created in the animal world.

I consider myself lucky to have had this opportunity by my good friend Debby. There will be more babies to come in the future….right after Luna gets her herding title!
